Understanding the Technique

What Is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage uses slow, firm strokes and sustained pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and fascia — the connective tissue that surrounds every muscle fiber in your body. Unlike Swedish massage, which focuses on relaxation through long, flowing movements, deep tissue therapy is designed to break up scar tissue, release chronic muscle tension, and restore range of motion that's been lost to injury, overuse, or years of accumulated stress.

At Azalea Spa, deep tissue isn't just about pressing harder. Our therapists combine deep tissue strokes with trigger point acupressure — a technique rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine that targets specific pain-referral points throughout the body. When a trigger point in your shoulder is sending pain up into your skull and causing headaches, we don't just work the symptom — we find the source and deactivate it. This combination of Western deep tissue technique and Eastern acupressure methodology is what sets our work apart from the typical "firm pressure" massage you'll find at chain spas around San Antonio.

Who It's For

Who Needs Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue therapy is for anyone dealing with persistent pain, restricted movement, or muscle tension that doesn't go away with rest. Here are the most common reasons our San Antonio clients book.

Chronic Lower Back Pain

The #1 reason clients book deep tissue at Azalea Spa. Prolonged sitting, heavy lifting, or disc issues create deep muscle guarding that only sustained pressure can release.

Neck & Shoulder Tension

Desk workers, drivers, and anyone who carries stress in their upper body. Deep tissue breaks through the layers of tension that accumulate from screen time and poor posture.

Sciatica & Nerve Pain

Piriformis syndrome and compressed nerves cause radiating pain down the leg. Targeted deep tissue work on the glutes and hip rotators relieves pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Headaches & Migraines

Tension headaches often originate from trigger points in the neck, shoulders, and jaw. Deep tissue therapy at the suboccipital muscles and upper traps can reduce headache frequency dramatically.

Sports Injuries & Recovery

Runners, CrossFit athletes, and weekend warriors dealing with IT band syndrome, plantar fasciitis, or rotator cuff strain. Deep tissue accelerates healing and prevents re-injury.

Post-Surgical Stiffness

After surgery, scar tissue and muscle guarding restrict movement. Deep tissue massage (once cleared by your doctor) helps restore flexibility and reduce adhesions.

Our Method

Our Deep Tissue Approach

Deep tissue done right requires skill, patience, and a plan. Here's how every session unfolds at Azalea Spa.

Assessment First

Every session starts with a conversation. We ask about your pain history, daily activities, and goals — then design the session around your specific needs.

Trigger Point Integration

We don't just push hard. Our therapists locate active trigger points — the hyperirritable spots that refer pain to other areas — and apply precise, sustained pressure to deactivate them.

Gradual Depth

We warm the tissue layer by layer before going deep. This reduces soreness, prevents bruising, and allows us to work at therapeutic depth without causing your muscles to guard.

Aftercare Guidance

Hydration, stretching, and heat/ice recommendations tailored to your session. We want the results to last between visits.

Comparison

Deep Tissue vs. Other Massage Styles

Not sure if deep tissue is right for you? Here's how it compares to other popular massage modalities.

vs. Swedish Massage

Swedish uses long, flowing strokes at lighter pressure for relaxation. Deep tissue uses slower, more focused strokes at greater depth to address chronic pain and structural issues.

vs. Sports Massage

Sports massage targets specific muscle groups used in athletic activity and often includes stretching. Deep tissue is broader — addressing chronic tension throughout the body regardless of activity level.

vs. Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger point therapy focuses exclusively on deactivating specific pain points. At Azalea Spa, we integrate trigger point work INTO our deep tissue sessions for a more comprehensive approach.

vs. Hot Stone Massage

Hot stone uses heated basalt stones to warm muscles and promote relaxation. It's gentler and better for stress relief. Deep tissue is better for chronic pain, injury recovery, and stubborn muscle knots.

Your Visit

What to Expect

First time getting deep tissue? Here's a walkthrough of the experience from arrival to aftercare.

Before Your Session

Arrive 5–10 minutes early. Avoid heavy meals. Wear comfortable clothing. Let your therapist know about injuries, medications, or areas to avoid.

During the Session

Communication is key. We'll check in on pressure throughout. Some discomfort is normal with deep tissue, but it should never be sharp or unbearable. Breathe deeply — it helps muscles release.

After the Session

Mild soreness for 24–48 hours is normal — similar to post-workout soreness. Drink plenty of water, avoid intense exercise, and use heat on sore areas.

How Often

For chronic pain, we recommend weekly or biweekly sessions for the first month, then monthly maintenance. Many clients notice significant improvement after just 2–3 sessions.

Neck & Shoulder Work

The most common complaint we treat — tension from desk work, driving, and screen time.

Questions

Deep Tissue Questions

What is deep tissue massage?

Deep tissue massage uses slow, firm strokes and sustained pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and fascia. Unlike Swedish massage, which works lighter and faster for relaxation, deep tissue is aimed at chronic muscle tension, adhesions, and restricted range of motion. At Azalea Spa in San Antonio it is combined with trigger point acupressure.

How much does deep tissue massage cost in San Antonio?

At Azalea Spa: $70 for 40 minutes, $90 for 60 minutes, $110 for 80 minutes, $120 for 90 minutes, and $180 for 120 minutes at member and first-time rates. Regular rates are $100, $120, $140, $150, and $210 respectively.

Does deep tissue massage hurt?

There is usually some discomfort when the therapist works a genuinely tight area, but it should never be sharp or unbearable. Pain makes muscles guard, which works against the treatment. Tell your therapist to ease off at any point — good deep tissue work happens at the edge of comfort, not past it.

How sore will I be afterward?

Mild soreness for 24 to 48 hours is normal and feels similar to post-workout soreness. Drink plenty of water, avoid intense exercise that day, and apply heat to sore areas. If you are still sore after three days, tell us and we will use less pressure next session.

How often should I get deep tissue massage?

For an active chronic problem, weekly or biweekly for the first month, then monthly maintenance. Most clients notice meaningful change after two or three sessions. For general tension rather than a specific issue, monthly is usually enough.

Deep tissue or trigger point — what is the difference?

Deep tissue works broadly through muscle layers with sustained pressure. Trigger point therapy targets specific hyperirritable spots that refer pain elsewhere — a knot in the shoulder causing headaches, for example. At Azalea Spa we integrate trigger point acupressure into every deep tissue session rather than selling them separately.
