What Is Prenatal Massage?

Prenatal massage is massage adapted for pregnancy. Three things change from a standard session: positioning, pressure, and which areas are worked. You lie on your side supported by bolsters and pillows rather than face down, pressure stays gentle to moderate throughout, and specific regions are avoided. Everything else — the calm room, the therapist checking in, the unhurried pace — is the same.

Positioning is where most of the difference lives. We do not use belly-cutout tables. In our experience side-lying with proper support under the head, between the knees, and along the abdomen is both more comfortable and easier to adjust mid-session than a cutout table, which locks you into one position for an hour. If side-lying does not work for you on the day, we can move to a semi-reclined seated position instead.

Most people who book prenatal massage at our West Ave location are dealing with lower back and hip discomfort, tight shoulders from changing posture, or swelling in the legs and feet — and simply want an hour of not being uncomfortable. We keep the session focused there. One thing we will always ask: please clear massage with your obstetrician or midwife first. That is their call to make, not ours, and we would rather you have the conversation than assume.

Before You Book

Safety First

We would rather turn a booking away than take one we should not. Please read this section before you reserve.

Clear It With Your Provider

Ask your obstetrician or midwife before booking. Recommendations differ by pregnancy, and their guidance takes precedence over anything on this page.

Tell Us Your Stage

Let us know how many weeks along you are at booking and again on arrival. It determines positioning, pressure, and which enhancements we can use.

High-Risk Pregnancy

With preeclampsia, a history of preterm labor, placental concerns, or any clotting or bleeding issue, we need explicit written clearance from your provider.

Add-Ons We Skip

No deep tissue upgrade, cupping, hot stone, or heating oils during pregnancy. Several essential oils are also set aside. We will guide you at check-in.

The Session

What to Expect

Side-Lying Support

Bolsters under the head, between the knees, and along the abdomen. No face-down positioning and no belly-cutout tables.

Where We Focus

Lower back, hips, glutes, shoulders, neck, and legs — where pregnancy discomfort concentrates as posture and weight distribution change.

Session Length

60 minutes is the most common choice. 40 minutes works well for focused back and shoulder relief if lying still for longer is uncomfortable.

Repositioning Anytime

Say the word and we will adjust. Needing to shift, sit up, or take a break partway through is completely normal and expected.

Questions

Prenatal Massage Questions

What is prenatal massage?

Prenatal massage is massage adapted for pregnancy. The main differences are positioning and pressure: you lie on your side supported by bolsters and pillows rather than face down, pressure stays gentle to moderate, and certain areas are avoided. Azalea Spa in San Antonio offers prenatal sessions from 40 to 120 minutes.

How much does prenatal massage cost in San Antonio?

Prenatal is priced with our therapeutic massage tier at Azalea Spa: $70 for 40 minutes, $90 for 60 minutes, $110 for 80 minutes, $120 for 90 minutes, and $180 for 120 minutes at member and first-time rates. Regular rates are $100, $120, $140, $150, and $210.

Is prenatal massage safe during pregnancy?

Talk to your obstetrician or midwife before booking — that conversation, not our advice, is what should decide it. Many providers are comfortable with prenatal massage after the first trimester for a low-risk pregnancy, but recommendations vary by individual. If you have a high-risk pregnancy, preeclampsia, a history of preterm labor, or any bleeding or clotting concern, get explicit medical clearance first.

How will I be positioned?

Side-lying, supported by bolsters and pillows under the head, between the knees, and along the abdomen. We do not use face-down positioning or belly-cutout tables. If side-lying is uncomfortable for you, semi-reclined seated positioning is also available.

When should I tell you I am pregnant?

At booking, and again when you arrive. Please tell us how many weeks along you are and anything your provider has flagged. This determines positioning, pressure, which areas we work, and which add-ons are appropriate — several of our oils and enhancements are not used during pregnancy.

Can I still get a foot or back massage?

Yes — the lower back, hips, shoulders, and legs are usually where pregnancy discomfort concentrates, and they are the focus of most prenatal sessions. Foot work is included but kept gentle. Deep tissue upgrades, cupping, and hot stone are not offered during pregnancy.
