What Is Swedish Massage?

Swedish massage is a full-body technique built on long, flowing strokes applied at light to moderate pressure, usually with oil. It is the style most people have in mind when they say "a massage." The classic sequence combines effleurage (long gliding strokes), petrissage (kneading), and friction, worked systematically over the back, legs, arms, neck, and shoulders.

What we offer at Azalea Spa is a Swedish Relaxation Combination Massage, and the word combination is doing real work in that name. A purely classical Swedish massage stays light throughout, which is wonderful for stress but leaves genuinely tight muscle untouched. Our therapists blend the flowing Swedish framework with light-to-moderate deep tissue work, so when they reach a knotted spot between your shoulder blades they can actually address it instead of gliding past it. You still get the calm, unhurried quality of a relaxation massage — with the tight areas handled.

This is the most-booked massage on our menu and the base treatment inside every House Special package and reflexology combo. It is also the most common choice for couples booking side by side, and the usual starting point for anyone getting a professional massage for the first time. If you decide mid-session that you want more pressure, tell your therapist — the deep tissue and trigger point acupressure upgrade is $20 and can be added on the table.

Who It's For

Who Books Swedish Massage

Swedish is the right starting point for the majority of guests. These are the situations it suits best.

Stress & Poor Sleep

The most common reason people book. A slow, full-body session with consistent rhythm is far better suited to winding down than intense focal work.

First-Time Massage

If you have never had a professional massage, start here. Pressure is adjustable throughout and nothing about the session is intense or surprising.

General Muscle Tightness

Everyday stiffness from desk work, driving, or a hard week at the gym — as opposed to a specific chronic injury, which calls for deep tissue.

Couples & Groups

The most-requested option for side-by-side bookings, because it works for two people regardless of their individual pressure preferences.

Comparison

Swedish vs. Other Styles

Choosing between modalities is easier when you know what each one is actually for.

vs. Deep Tissue

Deep tissue uses slower, firmer, more focused pressure to reach chronic tension and scar tissue. Swedish is broader, lighter, and aimed at relaxation.

vs. Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphatic drainage is much lighter still and follows a specific directional sequence at skin level. Swedish works muscle tissue with more varied pressure.

vs. Hot Stone

Hot stone adds heated basalt stones to warm muscle before and during the work. At Azalea Spa it is a $15 add-on to any Swedish session rather than a separate booking.

vs. Reflexology

Reflexology is concentrated pressure-point work on the feet. Our combo packages pair 20–30 minutes of reflexology with a 40–60 minute Swedish massage.

Questions

Swedish Massage Questions

What is Swedish massage?

Swedish massage is a full-body technique built on long, flowing strokes at light to moderate pressure. It is the style most people picture when they think of a massage. At Azalea Spa in San Antonio we offer it as a Swedish Relaxation Combination Massage, which blends classic Swedish strokes with light-to-moderate deep tissue work.

How much does Swedish massage cost in San Antonio?

At Azalea Spa: $60 for 40 minutes, $80 for 60 minutes, $100 for 80 minutes, $110 for 90 minutes, and $170 for 120 minutes at member and first-time rates. Regular rates are $90, $110, $130, $140, and $200 respectively.

Swedish or deep tissue — which should I book?

Book Swedish if you want to relax, reduce general stress, or ease mild-to-moderate tightness. Book deep tissue if you have a specific chronic problem — a shoulder that will not release, lower back pain, sciatica, or recurring tension headaches. If you are unsure, start with Swedish and add the $20 deep tissue upgrade so your therapist can go firmer on the areas that need it.

How long should my session be?

60 minutes is the most-booked length and covers the full body at a comfortable pace. Choose 40 minutes if you want focused work on the back, neck, and shoulders only. Choose 90 or 120 minutes if you want unhurried full-body coverage, including legs, feet, arms, and scalp.

Do I have to undress completely?

No. Undress to your comfort level. You are draped with a sheet throughout, and only the area being worked on is uncovered at any moment. Tell your therapist about any areas you would prefer they skip.

How often should I get a Swedish massage?

For general stress and wellness, most of our regular clients book monthly. If you are working through a period of high stress or poor sleep, every two weeks is common. Our $79.99 annual membership makes a regular cadence considerably cheaper.
