What Is Lymphatic Drainage Massage?
Lymphatic drainage massage is a very light, rhythmic massage technique applied in the direction of lymph flow. The lymphatic system is the network of vessels and nodes that carries lymph — a clear fluid — through the body as part of normal circulation and immune function. Because those vessels sit just beneath the skin rather than inside muscle, the technique uses deliberately gentle, repetitive strokes. Pressing hard would compress the very vessels the sequence is meant to follow.
This surprises most first-time clients. If your reference point for massage is deep tissue or trigger point acupressure, lymphatic drainage will feel far lighter than you expect — slow, skin-level, and more soothing than intense. That is the technique working as intended, not a therapist going easy on you. Clients who want firm pressure and muscle release are better served by our deep tissue session.
At Azalea Spa in San Antonio, lymphatic drainage is offered as part of our Lomi Lomi and Lymphatic Drainage session, which blends the drainage sequence with Traditional Chinese Medicine meridian work. Sessions run 40, 60, or 90 minutes at 13402 West Ave near North Star Mall. It is also available as a $30 upgrade added to another massage, and pairs well with the $10 heating essentials oil enhancement.

Setting Expectations
What This Session Is and Isn't
We would rather you book the right treatment than the popular one. Here is an honest framing of what a lymphatic drainage session at a wellness spa does and does not cover.
It Is a Wellness Service
A gentle, relaxing, non-medical bodywork session. Many clients book it as a lighter alternative to deep tissue, or as a change of pace between firmer sessions.
It Is Not Medical Care
Manual lymphatic drainage for a diagnosed condition such as post-surgical lymphedema belongs with a certified lymphedema therapist working under medical supervision — not a spa.
Check First If You Have a Condition
If you have a diagnosed heart, kidney, or circulatory condition, an active infection, or are in cancer treatment, speak with your physician before booking any massage.
Pressure Is Genuinely Light
If you leave a massage wanting to feel worked-on, book deep tissue or trigger point acupressure instead. These are different tools for different jobs.
The Approach
How We Work the Session
Directional Sequence
Strokes follow lymph pathways in a consistent order rather than moving around the body at random. Sequence matters more than pressure in this technique.
TCM Meridian Blend
Our therapists combine the drainage sequence with Traditional Chinese Medicine meridian work — the approach behind our Lomi Lomi and Lymphatic Drainage service.
Light, Repetitive Strokes
Slow and rhythmic throughout. The pace is intentionally unhurried; rushing the sequence defeats the point of the technique.
Optional Warm Oil
The $10 heating essentials oil enhancement is the add-on most often paired with this session. Luxury Fiji warming body oil is available at $30.

Questions
Lymphatic Drainage Questions
What is lymphatic drainage massage?
- Lymphatic drainage massage is a very light, rhythmic massage technique that follows the direction of lymph flow just beneath the skin. Unlike deep tissue work, the pressure is deliberately gentle — the lymphatic vessels sit in the superficial layer, so heavy pressure works against the technique rather than for it. Sessions at Azalea Spa run 40, 60, or 90 minutes.
How much does lymphatic drainage massage cost in San Antonio?
- At Azalea Spa: $90 for 40 minutes, $110 for 60 minutes, and $150 for 90 minutes at member and first-time rates. Regular rates are $120, $140, and $180 respectively. A $30 lymphatic drainage and Lomi Lomi upgrade can also be added to another massage.
What does lymphatic drainage massage feel like?
- Much lighter than clients expect. The strokes are slow, repetitive, and skin-level rather than muscle-level. Most people describe it as soothing rather than therapeutic-intense, and many find it more relaxing than a standard massage. If you want firm pressure, deep tissue is the better booking.
How is it different from a regular massage?
- A Swedish or deep tissue massage works muscle tissue with moderate to firm pressure. Lymphatic drainage works the fluid layer above the muscle with very light pressure and a specific directional sequence. They serve different purposes, and at Azalea Spa we blend the technique with Traditional Chinese Medicine meridian work.
Is lymphatic drainage massage a medical treatment?
- No. Azalea Spa provides therapeutic and relaxation massage, not medical care. Manual lymphatic drainage for a diagnosed condition such as post-surgical lymphedema should be performed by a certified lymphedema therapist under medical supervision. If you have a diagnosed circulatory, kidney, or heart condition, or are undergoing cancer treatment, talk to your physician before booking any massage.
How often should I book?
- For general wellness, most clients book monthly alongside their regular massage. There is no clinical schedule we can recommend for a non-medical setting — book at the frequency that feels useful to you, and tell your therapist what you noticed after the previous session.
